About Me

Real stories. Real therapy. Real hope - for parents raising children with special needs

Hi, I’m Debbie Mangortey, a global public health and project management professional based in Accra, Ghana. But the role that has taught me the most about life, love, and sheer determination is being mother to Kofi Entsi Yankson, better known as KEY.
KEY was born on 27th September 2013 with Down syndrome – and from that day, everything changed. Not just my routines and priorities, but the way I see the world, measure progress, and define joy. He is twelve years old now, almost a teenager, and I can tell you without hesitation: he is pure joy. This blog is the chronicle of our journey together.

I started Debbie’s KEY because I needed an honest space, one where I could share the daily realities of being a career woman raising a child with special needs, without sugarcoating the hard parts or understating the beautiful ones. Over the years, this space has grown into something bigger than I imagined: a community of parents who recognize their own story in mine, and who remind me regularly that none of us has to do this alone.

What is KEY Therapy Drive?
In 2019, our journey moved beyond this blog and into communities that needed more than just words. KEY Therapy Drive is the community outreach arm of Debbie’s KEY. Through it, we bring therapy awareness to underserved communities across Ghana, meeting parents where they are, with the information and support they need but often cannot access. Because every child deserves a fighting chance, regardless of where they were born or what their family can afford.

Why I’m still here
I took a long pause from this blog. Life, as it tends to do, had other plans. A lot has happened over the years, and I’ll be sharing those chapters gradually and honestly in the posts ahead. What I can tell you now is that I came back because this community matters, KEY’s story isn’t finished, and neither is mine.
If you are a parent navigating a special needs diagnosis, a professional working in disability or therapy, or simply someone who believes in the dignity and potential of every child, you are in exactly the right place.
Welcome, or welcome back.
Debbie
